The soothing, healing power of the sea has been understood for centuries – a traditional seaweed bath is a simple way to harness it, so you feel better from the inside out.

For communities like ours that live by the sea, the health-giving benefits of seaweed were always clear. The fishermen who plied their trade from Helvick Harbour, would have known that seaweed softened and soothed their skin, thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties. The farmers who harvested seaweed to nourish and enrich their land appreciated the rich minerals it contained.

The healing benefits of seaweed bathing were what drew the Victorians to the Waterford coast in the 19th century to take to the waters and ease their ailments. In fact, the tradition of seaweed bathing for health goes back many centuries across Europe, where thalassotherapy (from the Greek word for the sea), is a popular treatment for joint pain, fatigue, and poor circulation.

Now, in the 21st century, we understand more about the astonishing powers of seaweed itself and the benefits of seaweed baths for good health. You’ll notice them yourself when you come to visit!

Why Seaweed Heals: The Goodness You Absorb from a Mineral-Rich Seaweed Bath

Over 600 species of seaweed can be found around the Irish coastline. The harsh marine environment in which they survive means they have had to develop powerful defence mechanisms which can benefit us too.

As you relax in the seaweed-infused waters here at Sólás na Mara, and take much-needed time away from the world outside, our organic local seaweed gets to work, sharing its goodness and its defences with you!

Heat helps release a whole range of nutrients into the bathwater that are then absorbed as your pores open and your skin softens. These natural nutrients work from outside, and within, to help boost your health and wellness.

  • Iodine – Supports energy balance and healthy skin

  • Magnesium – Eases muscle tension and encourages deep relaxation

  • Calcium – Helps skin softness and supports natural repair

  • Potassium – Boosts hydration and keeps skin feeling smooth

  • Zinc – Soothes sensitive skin and promotes a clear complexion

  • Iron – Supports circulation for a healthy, radiant glow

Our Natural Defences: How Inflammation Affects the Body

Our bodies have their own natural defence mechanism – inflammation – which is not designed to stress or damage our systems. When things are working well, inflammation acts as a form of protection, helping to fight off pain, infection, and disease.

But, when inflammation goes too far, it can have negative impacts, including pain, stress, and fatigue, that affect your sense of well-being and quality of life.

Inflammation can affect joints, the digestive system, and our energy levels. It can also lead to reliance on medication and treatments that impact people’s ability to relax and enjoy life.

Science is starting to harness the natural healing power of seaweed, and its anti-inflammatory properties, to help solve these problems. In fact, innovative research is focused in particular on ways seaweed can be used to treat inflammation in our bodies.

The Anti-Inflammatory Properties of Seaweed

Many international scientists are focusing on the strong anti-microbial and anti-oxidative properties of Irish seaweeds. For example, teams at Teagasc – Ireland’s agriculture and food development authority – are working with colleagues across Europe, to find ways seaweed can help tackle inflammation caused by inflammatory bowel disease. Their work is giving them a better understanding of the healing properties seaweed has always had.

Molecules within algae are being used to develop functional foods and medication to relieve pain and inflammation.

Soak in the Therapeutic Benefits of Seaweed

While scientists are finding ways to grow and study seaweed in their labs, here at Sólás na Mara, we take a more traditional approach, immersing people in saltwater and locally harvested seaweed, so they can feel the benefits for the body instantly.

The sense of ease and relief that a seaweed bath gives you, during your time with us and long after your visit, is the surest sign your body recognises and benefits from seaweed’s healing power.

Seaweed Bath Benefits for Your Skin

As well as reducing inflammation, a mineral-rich seaweed bath nourishes and detoxifies your skin naturally. As you relax, your body soaks in vitamins A, C, & E which help protect and revitalise the skin with natural antioxidants and promote collagen production.

As you soak, your skin is gently cleansed in the hot seaweed bath, and it gains protection too. The seaweed slowly releases gel-like compounds that draw impurities from the skin, leaving it feeling fresh. And, as you let your mind clear, you’ll find that these seaweed compounds make the bathwater naturally silky and comforting.

As the seaweed steeps, it releases a soothing compound, called mucilage, which helps lock moisture into the skin and creates a protective barrier, so the nutrients you’ve absorbed can remain active for hours.

While it’s widely known that seaweed baths are good for your skin, it is less well-understood that seaweed is great for your hair as well. Iodine, zinc, and magnesium help calm the scalp and support healthy hair growth. The natural nutrients in seaweed also strengthen hair strands, boost hydration, and add softness and shine, while amino acids can improve elasticity and reduce breakage.

There’s no reason, then, not to slip your head back into the water as you rest!

After you bathe, you can take time to soak in the sea views in our relaxation area. Or take a while for coffee and cake in our café and shop, where you can browse Irish-made seaweed skincare products to keep you going until your next visit to Sólás na Mara.
